I don’t own the book pictured but I plan to engage in a lot of “garden tourism” soon. We will be traveling to Devon, Cornwall and Ireland this summer! I am so excited to see these beautiful parts of the world for the first time.  We will actually start in Glastonbury then work our way down the coast counterclockwise, ending up near Torquay for a family wedding. What gardens in the Southwest of England are not to be missed, in your opinion?

After the wedding, we will go to Northern Ireland and Dublin for a few days. I am excited to see the Giants’ Causeway and Trinity College, which my grandmother attended briefly many years ago. I know there will be many beautiful gardens to see in Ireland — which would you recommend? Thanks!

  1. Though it is many years since our last visit to SW England, I would highly recommend the Lost Gardens of Heligan and Trebah in Cornwall and Overbecks Museum and Garden in Salcombe, Devon. I think the Eden Project in Cornwall would also be fascinating! Have thoroughly been enjoying your blog, as we share an interest in plants and gardens, as well as garden history, garden books and visiting other people’s beautiful gardens. I don’t think you can ever have enough garden books and some of the oldies are the best! I have a lovely little hardback ‘Garden Shrubs and Trees in Colour’, published by Blandford Press in 1959, its coloured drawings accompanied by delightfully quaint black-and-white pencil sketches of houses or pipe-smoking gardeners raking and mowing to give an indication of plant height and size. Worth trying to source- I think it was even digitized in 2009. Because I have really enjoyed reading your posts, I have just nominated you for a Liebster Award in my latest post : https://candeloblooms.com/2016/07/05/a-happy-surprise-the-liebster-award/. I look forward to reading your responses! Thank you.

    1. We went to Heligan and to the Eden Project! They were both great; see my most recent post, about the Lost Gardens of Heligan. Thanks for the recommendation, I don’t know that we would have gone otherwise!
